Shutter Island Film Analysis

My favourite thriller film is the psychological thriller Shutter Island: directed by Martin Scorsese. The first two minutes of this film are very ‘to-the-point’ and we meet the main characters immediately. The titles of the film are on a black background and are in large, silver font, which is bolded. The black background represents darkness and mystery and therefore we are intrigued as to see what lies beneath. ‘Shutter Island’ is shown in the middle of the title sequence and is put in a larger font for the audience to decipher it as different from the rest of the titles. I really like the way the scene is set by the caption ‘Boston Harbour Islands 1954’ and that it is introduced into the frame along with the sound of a foghorn. We then see a boat protruding through the fog which is mysterious and because of the water; we are introduced to the feeling of fear of the unknown: everything is calm on the surface but we are unsure as to what lies underneath. The music and sounds in the background are a good inspiration to our thriller as they are build suspense and are skeptical. The manacles and the man being sick due to the boat and water also add to the fear that is felt and represent his insecurities. The two men wear detective coats which would have been worn in the 50s, when the film was set.
The film, for me, is one of my favourites because I am very interested in psychological thrillers and films that include a lot of thought. Shutter Island includes a range of codes and conventions and is a very interesting film. On the other hand, some people might disagree with my opinion and see the film as confusing.
